ABOUT ANDREA

Andrea Richards writes about art, cultural histories, forgotten philosophical systems, and modern life for a variety of publications, including The Believer, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and INDY Week. She is the author of five nonfiction books, including TASCHEN's bestselling Library of Esoterica Volume 2: Astrology, a visual history of the art of astrology. Her three Los Angeles guidebooks catalog some of the city's unsung places, dynamic histories, and visionary people. Girl Director: A How-To Guide for the First-Time, Flat-Broke Film and Video Maker (Ten Speed/Random House, 2010), her first book, is a celebration of the long history of women working in film and an indie filmmaking guide that Kim Gordon called “a true reminder of the possibilities.”

Andrea is a managing partner of the Los Angeles-based creative collective Narrated Objects, and has programmed and produced cultural exhibitions and events for a wide variety of arts organizations and clients. She has toured the world leading workshops on writing and/or filmmaking, and has taught creative writing through arts organizations on three continents.

Andrea received an M.F.A. in Critical Writing from CalArts and her B.A. from UNC-CH where she majored in Religious Studies and American Studies. Outside of formal education, she comes from a long line of folks who practice plant magic (farmers) and philosophy (preachers). All of this might explain her current predicament as a bicoastal mystic who is an aspiring ceramicist. Her muse in art, fashion, and philosophy is Beatrice Wood.
